It means power in Zulu and Xhosa.
Amandla is a brand from the HER Wine Collection, an all-black, all-women business and a great success in a male-dominated industry. The word Amandla means power in Zulu and Xhosa and reflects the mission of the company which looks to the future, celebrating Africa and, in particular, the skilled women who make these wines.
Everyone in the company, the HER Wine Collection, is black and female. The MD and winemaker, the viticulturist, the accountant, the logistics manager, the stock controller are all black women.
Amandla celebrates the power and resilience of women who inspire future generations with these wines. They are emblazoned with distinctive labels giving a beautiful nod to African women and the country’s exotic flowers, butterflies and birds. I have tried two wines from this range, and they are called Future and Power!
Future Sauvignon Blanc
Tasting notes: Crisp and zesty with hints of tropical fruit and citrus. It is medium-bodied and is dry with pleasing fresh balanced acid, making this the perfect choice to pair with shellfish dishes but also with goat’s cheese. Serve well chilled as a pre-dinner sip as well.
Power Shiraz Zinfandel
Tasting notes: Rich and mouth-filling with notes of black berries, cherries and pepper. It is bold, medium dry with balanced acid and tannins. Enjoy this with robust beef and game dishes or umami-laden mushroom pasta.
