Cocktails and mocktails

Stuart Walton has penned a host of cocktail books but this large tome is a collection of his recipes covering both classic and contemporary drinks.  There is plenty of advice for making both cocktails and mocktails, and a selection of those is handy when entertaining anybody who might be in charge of a motor vehicle at the end of the evening. There are plenty of enticing colour photographs illustrating the finished drinks with garnishes. Presentation is key to a good cocktail. One drinks with one’s eyes!

After-dinner tipple

All those celebrated cocktail standards are here. No cocktail book worth its rimming salt would be missing such favourites as a Margarita or the deliciously retro Harvey Wallbanger so loved by 1970s bar flies. And there are lots of cocktails which are new to me such as Caffe Vermouth which would be a delicious after-dinner tipple. It’s light on the alcohol so a great end to a long evening. An Apple Sour is perhaps one of my cocktails of choice. It’s a heady mix of cognac and calvados, so likely one for solitary sipping by the fire.

Indispensable bar equipment

Classic Cocktails starts with an introduction to all types of alcohol and mixers including spirits, liqueurs, wines and the often-overlooked beer. There is a guide to indispensable bar equipment, glassware and garnishes. This would be a one-stop book for budding bartenders who will be able to confection perfect cocktails to suit every taste.
