Worth the Trip!
It’s January and a chunk of the population will be stepping away from their habitual glass of red or beer, and avoiding meat. I am all for a more thoughtful lifestyle and that should linger for another 11 months, too. Crosstown Vegan Doughnuts allow one to indulge in a little guilt-free pleasure without feeling deprived of the good stuff.
Crosstown launched in 2014 with a market stall on Leather Lane. This historic London street market was founded in 1666 and is famed for its food stalls. Crosstown now have sixteen locations. They offer a convenient delivery service to allow customers to buy doughnuts online and receive a beautifully presented box of sweet treats delivered to your address or to one of the Crosstown locations for collection.
Crosstown produce both regular and vegan doughnuts
In 2017 Crosstown created a vegan hybrid sourdough alternative to the original dough but with that same quality. Now Crosstown produce both regular and vegan doughnuts. For the vegan version they have replaced eggs and dairy with plant-based alternatives to achieve the same tastes and textures expected from any good classic doughnut. They take advantage of chia seeds and coconut butter in their dough, along with oat milk, dairy-free dark chocolate and silken tofu to produce the fillings and glazes.
We tried three flavours of the hearty limited-edition Veganuary doughnuts. No, I am not a vegan, I am not even a vegetarian, but you don’t need to be to enjoy these unique creations.
Rose and Pistachio Vegan Doughnut had a delicate taste and is made with the Crosstown vegan sourdough base. Perfect for an afternoon tea.
Coffee, Cardamom and Coconut limited edition Veganuary doughnut was an inspired melange of coffee and exotic cardamom and coconut. The cocoa-infused vegan sourdough hid the creamy coffee and cardamom custard. The doughnut was covered in a sweet white coconut glaze with coconut flakes for added texture.
Hazelnut Praline, Tarragon and Green Apple limited edition Veganuary doughnut was perhaps my favourite from the collection (although I enjoyed all of them). A hazelnut praline icing topped the sourdough base surrounding the filling of green apple and tarragon jam. This should be on the year-round doughnut menu.
Crosstown deserve their success. Their vegan offerings are indistinguishable from good quality traditional doughnuts. Their flavours are inspired, and the only things missing are guilt and compromise.
