Piccodoro Nero d’Avola

PiccodoroNero d’Avola or ‘Black of Avola’ in Italian, is one of the most iconic red wine grapes found on the island of Sicily. It is considered one of Italy’s most important local varieties. It is named after Avola, a small town in southeast Sicily, and has been popular there for hundreds of years. The grapes used to make this wine are harvested by hand due to the terrain.

This Nero d’Avola Sicilia Denominazione Origine Controllata from Tesco is a fine example of what this grape has to offer. It’s a well-priced red with plenty of body and is a great all-rounder for festive meals as well as solitary sipping – perhaps with a cube or two of cheese. It’s perfect with robust roasts of both red and white meats. It’s one of my wine choices for pairing with lamb as it can hold its own against that flavourful fat. It’s also suitable for vegans so perfect for the dinner party season. Non-meat dishes with rich sauces work well with Piccodoro Nero d’Avola.

Piccodoro Nero d’Avola is a luscious full-bodied wine with bold flavours of dark cherries, red fruits, black pepper with a lingering and mouth-filling finish.
