The Relais Henley

History and amenity.

The Relais FacadeThere can surely be no finer pleasure than finding a hotel which ticks off everything on one’s ‘stay’ wish list. The Relais Henley will likely do just that. It did for us.

This sumptuous historic hotel, formerly The Red Lion, offers an authentic marriage of original charm and contemporary comfort and technology. Tourists looking for a unique experience won’t be disappointed with their venture away from London. The Relais Henley is located just 25 minutes from Heathrow and an hour’s train ride from London Paddington station, making this the perfect location for a night or two at the start or end of a UK visit.

The Relais Henley is set just by the famous bridge in Henley-on-Thames. It was originally a coaching inn known as The Red Lion Hotel, and a lion still guards the entrance. The stunning red brick façade was added in Georgian times.

The building has a long history. In the 1530s it housed the craftsmen who built St Mary’s Church.  In 1632 it hosted King Charles I. 1732 is the first recorded date that the hotel was known as The Red Lion. The Royal Coat of Arms of King Charles I is preserved over the fireplace in room 108. The 1st Duke of Marlborough frequently stayed in room 109. We stayed in room 115. Other noteworthy guests include King George and Queen Charlotte, Boswell and Dr Johnson in 1776, The Duke of Wellington, Sir Winston Churchill, and Grace Kelly.

The Relais Henley is quite one of the nicest hotels I have stayed in – and as a travel writer it has been my pleasure to stay in a good many. It has an individual charm which is impossible to replicate. It exudes accessible luxury while avoiding corporate bling. The staff are an asset: they are polished and professional yet friendly. Great ambassadors for the brand.

Picturesque town

The Relais LibraryOur room offered a river view of scullers braving the frigid water and swirling mist of a late October morning. You won’t get that in central London! The room was well appointed with an imposing wardrobe enough to house the contents of several capacious suitcases. The bathroom offered a roomy shower with a selection of toiletries and fluffy bathrobes. The there were plenty of electric points for charging one’s devices. There was a kettle, milk, tea and coffee to revive the weary. The king-size bed promised a very good night’s rest. It’s so tempting to stay and relax in the hotel but there is that picturesque town to explore, the famous river to discover.

The Relais Henley offers plenty of cosy public spaces too! The décor is beautiful and in keeping with the age of the building but without drifting into the realms of historic theme park. The hotel has artfully retained the ambiance of a tasteful home, a comfortable retreat indeed. Perhaps one is looking for a quiet moment with a book, an attractive lounge in which to enjoy a traditional afternoon tea, a bar for adult beverages. It’s all here. Restaurant Dominic Chapman is a light and airy magnet for those looking for an unhurried lunch, dinner or breakfast. Look up! There is a real boat hanging from the ceiling, reminding one of those aforementioned river pursuits.

Breakfast

And that breakfast! One can fill up on pastries, toast a slice or two of fresh bread, enjoy some fresh fruit or cereal or Clipper Müesli. There is porridge, pancakes, the ever-popular Full English, but the egg options are the unmissable plates here. The generous Benedicts have salmon, along with classic ham and spinach varieties. All delicious, but decadent smoked salmon is memorable and for many, Instagram-worthy.

The Relais RestaurantThe hotel could be your venue of choice for a private event, business meeting, or celebration. The rooms can be customized and tailored to your needs.
